Every-so-often I will be rolling out a new style of episode called Meander Mile, where I take you on a guided walk through a single street in London, or elsewhere in the United Kingdom; I'll show you streets you're already familiar with and street you aren't, pointing out locations you'll recognise from the podcast, and introducing you to new true-crime tales, as yet untold.

This week's episode focuses on Covent Garden, WC1; we'll visit Russian Dora, David Belasco, Edward Crowley, Reverend Hackman, Bow Street Police Station, Morris Sholman, Karl Taylor, Ada Chard, William Terris, Georgi Markov, Ann Webb, John Robinson, Dennis Nilsen and the Resurrection Men, to name but a few.

THE LOCATIONS
For your enjoyment, I've posted photos of the locations discussed in this episode. They're all in chronological order. These photos were taken by myself (copyright Murder Mile).
  • #1 - Covent Garden tube station (corner of Long Acre and James Street)
  • #2 - Long Acre (heading towards Russian Dora's murder location)
  • #3 - Covent Garden piazza (Martha Ray murder)
  • #4 - Russell Street (heading to Bow Street and Newgate Prison)
  • #5 - Southampton Street (looking towards The Strand, and Ann Webb's murder)
  • #6 - Maiden Lane (the William Terris murder)
  • #7 - Waterloo Bridge (Georgi Markov)
  • #8 - Newgate Street by The Old Bailey (execution site)
  • #9 - 3 Bedfordbury (home of the Bedfordbury baby batterer)
  • #10 - Charing Cross railway station

If you want to see 3 Henrietta Street where Alfred Hitchcock's penultimate film Frenzy was shot with large chunks of it shot in Covent Garden in 1971, click on the video. You can see how it looked when it was still a fruit & veg market.
